Karachi Saddar (which means centre) was developed as a European Quarter during the British Raj. It was meant to be distinguished from the native neighbourhoods of Mithadar, Kharadar and Jodia Bazaar, which are Karachi’s oldest settlements. Many iconic buildings of Karachi Saddar were established in the colonial area, which are still in use today. Many are known by name such as The Empress Market, St. Andrew’s Church, The Kutchi Memon Masjid, The Governor’s house, and Frere Hall. But countless more colonial era buildings are remain hidden in plain sight as retail shops and subsidized housing.
Saddar was the centre of power of the Sindh Provincial Government between 1936 to 1948. It resumed this role in 1970 and continues to the present. The Provincial Assembly of Sindh, the High Court of Sindh and the Governor’s house Sindh are all located within the boundaries of Saddar
Today, the northern half Saddar is essentially the retail district for all of Karachi. It has some of the city’s oldest markets such as Zainab Market, Bohri Bazaar and the Empress Market where you will find everything from foods to textiles to exotic birds. - Hotel Al-Harmain Tower in Saddar is different from Harmain Towers which is an apartment complex in Gulistan-e-Johar near the airport
Hotel Al-Harmain Tower is one of the cheapest hotels in Saddar by the square foot and the amenities it offers. Most of its 138 rooms are frequently booked by traveling businessmen, and many are leased out on long term (by frequently returning corporate clients).
The rooms at the Karachi Hotel Al-Harmain Tower are around 200 sq.ft in area, and can be booked with either a single Queen size bed or two twin bed configuration. The old rooms seem to have not changed since the late 1990s. The furniture has glossy, textured veneer which was popular back then. The windows are hidden behind curtains that look heavy. As a final touch, the TV is a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube), hardly ever found in today’s homes.
The newer rooms thankfully have an updated look with better looking furnishings and a flat-screen TV.
