Karachi Saddar (which means centre) was developed as a European Quarter during the British Raj. It was meant to be distinguished from the native neighbourhoods of Mithadar, Kharadar and Jodia Bazaar, which are Karachi’s oldest settlements. Many iconic buildings of Karachi Saddar were established in the colonial area, which are still in use today. Many are known by name such as The Empress Market, St. Andrew’s Church, The Kutchi Memon Masjid, The Governor’s house, and Frere Hall. But countless more colonial era buildings are remain hidden in plain sight as retail shops and subsidized housing.

Saddar was the centre of power of the Sindh Provincial Government between 1936 to 1948. It resumed this role in 1970 and continues to the present. The Provincial Assembly of Sindh, the High Court of Sindh and the Governor’s house Sindh are all located within the boundaries of Saddar

Today, the northern half Saddar is essentially the retail district for all of Karachi. It has some of the city’s oldest markets such as Zainab Market, Bohri Bazaar and the Empress Market where you will find everything from foods to textiles to exotic birds. The Atrium Mall in Zainab Market is an attraction on its own with over 100 designer outlets and a Digital 3D Cineplex (the first in Pakistan) that is extremely popular among Karachiites. Its food-court has more restaurants than any other mall in Karachi.

The southen part of Karach Saddar along I.I. Chundrigar Road is the economic backbone of Pakistan. Here you will find headquarders of most of Pakistan’s largest banks, the Pakistan Stock Exchange and the State Bank of Pakistan.
