Lufthansa, the biggest airline in Europe (and the third biggest in the world) by revenue, announced that it will commence direct flights to Ottawa from its primary hub at Frankfurt from May 16th, 2020.
This announcement comes as fellow Star Alliance member, Air Canada retires its Ottawa to Frankfurt route by the end of the 2019 season.
The new route is scheduled to depart five days a week and will be seasonal, starting on May 16, 2020, and ending on October 24, 2020.
It will be served by an Airbus A340-300 in a three-class cabin configuration. The aircraft includes 30 Business Class, 28 Premium Economy and 221 Economy Class seats to accommodate a total of 279 passengers.

Ottawa sorely lacks a transatlantic connection. There is only one scheduled year around connection to London-Heathrow (LHR) by Air Canada.
While Air Canada and Lufthansa enjoy an A++ transatlantic joint venture with United Airlines, the Lufthansa brand can better integrate with passenger experience especially when they will be connecting from Frankfurt to their final destination.
According to Skytrax Lufthansa is the only five-star rated airline in the Western Hemisphere. It currently serves the Canadian cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver with daily scheduled flights year-round. Seasonal flights from Frankfurt operate to Calgary.
