Ahmedabad or Amdavad is the largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat, and the fifth-largest city in India, with a population of 5.6 million people. It is reachable from any point in Gujarat by a journey of no longer than 470km. At the turn of the 20th century, it was one of the biggest centres for textile manufacturing in the world. Today it serves as an important hub of manufacturing, services, education and technology for Gujarat.
The Gujarati community in the United States has made many achievements in establishing long-running businesses, especially in New Jersey. While the grocery store Patel Brothers is already a household name, Gujarati-Americans also control more than 40% of the motel industry in the United States. Additionally, they dominate in franchising American restaurant chains such as Subway and Dunkin Donuts across the United States and Canada.
The community’s success is largely due to the fact that people follow those who succeed. If a Gujarati wants to open up a motel or franchise business, for example, he will have ready access to experienced investors and advice from within the community.
How many flights and airlines can New Yorkers and New Jerseyans choose from when planning for travel to Ahmedabad?
In 2016, India’s national carrier, Air India wanted to tap into the niche Gujarati-American market, and began direct flights from New York JFK to Ahmedabad (AMD), with a halt in London (LHR). However, Air India’s uncompetitive in-flight offerings (largely due to its debt woes) resulted in a poor demand, and ultimately, the route was cancelled in 2018.
Ahmedabad is served by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD). Established in 1937, it is one of India’s oldest airports, but it only began serving international flights in from the 1990s. Currently, the furthest route west from Sardar Patel Airport is to London-Heathrow (LHR) operated by Air India.
Long haul carriers based in the Middle East such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways and Kuwait Airways carry passengers directly from Sardar Patel Airport (AMD) to their respective hubs in Dubai (DXB), Doha (DOH), Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Kuwait City (KWI).
These four middle-eastern airlines operate direct flights to New York (JFK) from their home cities. Emirates operates an additional flight to Newark (EWR) from Dubai (DXB) via Athens (ATH).
Ahmedabad Airport is well connected to Delhi and Mumbai by flights operated by Air India, IndiGO, SpiceJet, GoAir and Vistara; thus providing convenient connections to New York and New Jersey bound flights operated by Air India, Delta and United.
Currently, Air India operates one daily flight to Delhi from New York (JFK), and one daily flight to Mumbai from Newark (EWR). It suspended its Mumbai-JFK route on March 10, 2019, and this slot will be taken over by Delta Airlines starting December 22, 2019.
United Airlines also operates daily flights to Delhi and Mumbai from its hub at Newark (EWR).
Therefore there are around 10 solid options to choose from if you are intending to fly to Ahmedabad (AMD) from New York (JFK) and New Jersey (EWR). I have summarized these options in the following table:
|Airline||Flight #||From||To||Non-Stop to AMD|
