Football Fever 2008 !

Being a life long football fan (that’s soccer to you NFL/CFL fans), I get this fever during every World Cup, the Euro Cup and to a lesser extent during the Asian Cup and Copa América.

Euro Cup 2008 kicked off today and the first game was played between Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The Czechs won the game by scoring 1 goal in the 68th minute. The Swiss did have a couple of chances of making a tie, but their confidence was largely shaken after the Czech score.
Within the next hour another game will begin between Portugal and Turkey, which will be played in Geneva. I’ve been posting live game highlights and scores on my Twitter.

I don’t have a favourite team among the Europeans because it’s very hard to predict. But their football is always very entertaining.

Since I don’t have Cable TV, I’ll be watching the games on OMNI-TV, where commentary is mostly in Italian and a few games will be broadcast in Portuguese, Polish and Greek. If you live in Ontario, you can follow the schedule on the OMNI-TV Website.

Hmmm…not really much of a football fan, don’t see why a bunch of men running around in shorts after a ball is entertaining to some people, but then that’s just me. A lot of girls in my class are really into football, and they get so excited when Man U or Chelsea or whatever scores a goal. I heard somewhere (I think it was in one of Sheikh Yusuf Estes lectures) that why waste your time WATCHING sports when you could actually be outside PLAYING it. I totally agree. but then I cannot be bothered to play sports as I am sooooo unfit and lazy :D
I hope whichever team you support wins, inshaAllah!

I’m not much into sports either, (if you remember all those games-classes we used to ditch way back in high school :D), but you’re right abt the fever thing.
Almost every car, bicycle and even people’s headgear here carries a flag these days…
And tomorrow, my company’s invited the our whole lot over for a “team event” so we can watch Germany’s game on the big screen. Oh bummer.

Tuba - whoever said it was absolutely right. It was a so the Prophet’s (PBUH) to encourage playing sports. There are several narrations about how he encouraged sports of the day like racing and archery

Noor - Yea I remember those days. I couldn’t bear to run around in the hot sun and get dehydrated. I can still remember how the whole class stank of sweat when they came back to class !

I’m not a huge soccer fine either guys, but I do enjoy the big tournaments like the Euro and the World Cup. Granted, I do enjoy the finals of the Premier league. However, when people talk about football, I love the CFL up in Canada. Great game.

Hey Ron welcome to ManiaRavings ! I too can’t wait for the Grey Cup championship in Montreal this November.
I live in Tiger Town and I think it’s time they bring the cup back to Hamilton !

I agree, the Tiger Cats will be a much improved team from last season and you just never know if Casey Printers can play to his ability and Jesse Lumsden stays healthy. Like the Tabbies here Jaffer.
