thx loads for the tips; actually I am seriously starting to look towards a commercial domain…and yeah your post on BlogBloke has a lot to do with it

Regarding the pic; no, I’m talking about the “ManiaRavings of a raving Maniac” box which (lke your footer) is in shade between gray and sky blue and doesn’t seem to go with the rest of your color scheme.

Firas: I skipped Drupal in this review because I wasn’t able to go in depth with it as much I did with those those listed here. Also, I will definitely do this again with other platforms (and Drupal) and as blogging software mature.

Rahman: Are you talking about the Espresso and Fudge cookies in the header ? That’s my inspiration and I won’t replace it. Is it too light/almost invisible ?

Having your own domain-name gives you a lot more search-engine exposure and since you are paying for the domain, you will be looked upon as a serious blogger. I wrote a whole post on it at BlogBloke

But it’s ultimately upto you !

One of these days, I need to move off Blogger’s domain (not to mention standard layouts!) and find my own home; but like you said - I don’t blog for a living, so that day seems pretty far off.

Nice new design…although you might wanna change the front pic (with your tagline) to something that suits the current color-scheme.

Thanks for the reviews on different platforms…I really need to start exploring them.

A debate between MovableType and WordPress can go on and on and on ! I have mentioned in this post that I did not really like MovableType’s templating system while a MovableType fan would say that WordPress’ tags are no better.

Frankly I don’t like getting into such arguments. If something works for you, stick with it whether it’s Linux-Windows or Microsoft Office - Open Office or Wordpress-Movabletype.

The other reason I moved from MovableType was the space requirements. Personally if a smaller platform does the same thing I want, I’d go for it instead. (Which is why I’d like to play with Textpattern which is only around 1MB install).

This was a great review of the different platforms. I spent some time this afternoon reading a thread on a site that was debating the benefits of WordPress over Movable Type. The blog owner had switched from MT and posted his reasons for doing so. One of his regular readers is a fan of MT, so the debate was on. The bottom line for me was I didn’t understand most of what they were talking about, but I was validated in my choice of WordPress.

I have played with Joomla and a couple of the other CMS packages, but I decided it was overkill. I’m actually having some fun tying together my blog, photo gallery and calendar pages using html and php. It’s all a learning process.

Thank you for sharing those links. I’ve been to WeLoveTXP but couldn’t recall it while I was writing the post.

IMHO the TextPattern community really needs to round-up folks and focus them on the online documentation.
Books are great but the first place folks will go today is online.

I am still considering Textpattern for a project I have in mind but not without a lot of help !

You might be surprised to hear that Textpattern actually runs sites like Carhart Street Wear or NASA Astrobiology, plus a few more which certainly fail to fall into the “throw-away site” category.
